Algert Peterson Photograph of the Pagoda at Sweet Springs

This photograph is from the Leonard D. & Marie H. Rehkop Collection of Algert Peterson photographic glass plates. The collection is located in the digital collections of State Historical Society of Missouri. Algert T. Peterson (1880-1959) was a photographer from Higginsville.

The image was taken from the southeast and gives a fantastic view of the placement of the two structures. The Pagoda was further west, more in the valley, from the placement of the current pagoda. It is unclear when this photo was taken, but it was mostly from about 1915 - 1925.  The Bottling Works was demolished in 1936 and the bricks sold by J.T. Hill Produce Company. We have been unable to determine when the Pagoda was dismantled.

The Pagoda was built at the spring in 1877, the pagoda was forty-eight feet high, with a foundation of heavy masonry and sides of the roof containing many colored glass panels. Inside was a beautiful fountain of marble. A fish pool was located just below the pagoda. Cost to construct the pagoda was $2,500.

Finding these photographs of the original Pagoda is rare, so enjoy.
